What this is
A precast concrete safety barrier, the type many people search for as a New Jersey barrier or NJB. Unlike a plastic water-filled barrier, which channels traffic, a concrete barrier is built to stop a vehicle. The standard treats them differently: plastic serves as a channelizing and guiding device, while concrete is the safety barrier for the serious cases (ATJ 2C/85, 2.3.2.3 and 2.3.2.4).
When it is used
- Excavations 1 m deep or more, with at least 0.6 m clearance from the barrier to the edge (ATJ 2C/85, 2.3.2.4(a)).
- Where a permanent safety feature has been removed: guardrails, bridge railings, median barriers.
- Close to rigid objects such as sheet piling, bridge structures and stockpiles, at sharp corners, in flood-prone areas, and near slope failures (ATJ 2C/85, 2.3.2.4(b)).
- Long-running closures where plastic units would need constant refilling and checking.
Before you order
- Arranged in alternating black and yellow and interlocked, which is how the standard requires them placed (ATJ 2C/85, 2.3.2.4(c)).
- Delivery only. Each unit needs machine handling, so we deliver, position and collect with our own transport. Send the site address with your order and we quote the transport with the rate.
- Not sure whether the job needs concrete or plastic? The dividing line in the standard is excavation depth: under 1 m, a water-filled plastic barrier with 1 m clearance is acceptable; 1 m or deeper calls for concrete. Tell us the depth and we will confirm.
- Delineators mount on the barrier line for night visibility; add solar blinkers to your order for dark or high-speed sections.
