Malaysian road work signs and what they mean

The temporary signs you see around Malaysian road works are set by wording, not by picture, and most of that wording is in Malay. Here is what each one actually says, when it is used, and the board we rent it on. Every sign listed is one we hold in the yard in Bandar Baru Bangi.

AWAS PEMBINAAN DI HADAPAN

Means
Caution, construction ahead.
Used when
The board that opens a work zone. It goes up first, before the taper, so a driver reads it while still at full speed and has room to slow down.

PEMBINAAN TAMAT

Means
Construction ends.
Used when
The board that closes a work zone. It goes at the far end, after the last cone, telling drivers the restriction is finished and normal conditions resume.

MAN AT WORK

Means
Workers on the road ahead.
Used when
Any time people are working on or beside the carriageway rather than behind a hard barrier. Highway spec is a larger board for higher approach speeds.
Rent this board: Man At Work

FLAG MAN

Means
A person is directing traffic ahead.
Used when
Single-lane working, convoy control, or any point where a human is holding and releasing traffic. The board warns drivers before they reach the flagman, not at them.

HAD LAJU 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 KM/J

Means
Speed limit, in kilometres per hour. Km/j is kilometer sejam.
Used when
Stepping traffic down through a work zone. The boards are adjustable, so one board covers 20 through 80 rather than needing seven separate signs.
Rent this board: Speed Limit (20/30/40/50/60/70/80 Km/J)

END SPEED LIMIT

Means
The temporary speed limit ends here.
Used when
Paired with the speed limit boards. Without it, drivers do not know where the restriction stops, and the limit becomes unenforceable in practice.
Rent this board: End Speed Limit

ROAD NARROW LEFT / RIGHT

Means
The road narrows from the left or the right.
Used when
Lane drops and shoulder closures. The board is adjustable, so the same unit covers a narrowing from either side.
Rent this board: Road Narrow Left / Right (Adjustble )

LANE CLOSURE

Means
A lane is closed ahead.
Used when
Sold as one, two or three lane versions so the board matches the actual closure. Fast lane closure is the version for the outer overtaking lane.
Rent this board: Lane Closure (1 Lane )

DANGER / AWAS

Means
Danger. Awas is the Malay for caution or warning.
Used when
Open excavations, exposed services, drop-offs, anything where the hazard is the site itself rather than the traffic arrangement.
Rent this board: Danger

WARNING SIGN

Means
General warning board.
Used when
The catch-all when the hazard does not have its own dedicated sign. Usually paired with cones or barriers that mark the physical extent.
Rent this board: Warning Sign

ADJUSTABLE ARROW

Means
Traffic must pass on the side shown.
Used when
Directing traffic around a closure. Adjustable means one board serves left or right, so a change in the layout does not need a different sign.
Rent this board: Adjustable Arrow

DIRECTIONAL SIGNBOARD

Means
Follow this direction.
Used when
Diversions and detours where traffic leaves its normal route. These route traffic rather than only warning about the works.
