Renting or buying traffic cones in Malaysia

A lot of people searching for a traffic cone supplier are trying to work out whether to buy or rent. We only rent, so treat this as an interested opinion, but the arithmetic below is the same one we would run ourselves and it does not always come out in our favour.

When buying is the right call

If you need the same small number of cones on the same site every working day, buy them. A factory yard, a school pick-up lane, a car park, a permanent loading bay: the requirement never goes away, the quantity never changes, and you have somewhere to keep them. Rental is the wrong tool for a permanent need.

When renting is the right call

Project work, where the quantity swings. You need 200 cones and 40 barriers for three weeks, then none for two months, then a different mix for the next job. Buying to your peak means paying for your peak all year and storing it. Renting also moves the replacement problem: split cones, faded boards and cracked bases are ours, not yours.

The break-even sum, honestly

Our monthly rate on a 750mm cone is RM10, and a 1 metre road barrier is RM25 a month. Take whatever a comparable unit costs you to buy and divide it by the monthly rate: that is how many months of rental the purchase is worth. If your need runs longer than that number of months and the quantity does not change, buying wins on price alone.

What the sum leaves out

Storage space and the cost of the space. Loading and transport at both ends of every job. Cleaning. Replacing units that split, fade or go missing off a live site, which they do. And for JKR signage specifically, the board wording changes with the job, so a bought sign is right for exactly one kind of work zone and wrong for the next one.

The JKR signage exception

Signage is the clearest case for renting. Wording, size and mounting are specified per submission, so a set bought for one project frequently does not satisfy the next. Cones are generic and barriers are semi-generic. Boards are not.

What we actually do

We rent, across Peninsular Malaysia, with every rate published on this site. We do not sell equipment, so if buying is the right answer for you, we would rather say so here than take a call about it. If renting is the right answer, the rates are one tap away.
