The signage question usually arrives in the wrong order. Someone is told they need JKR signage, so they ask for a price, and nobody has yet established what the site actually requires. Then the set turns up and half of it is wrong.

Who decides what you need

The requirement is not set by the supplier. It comes from whoever owns and controls the road, and it will be written into your approval, your permit or your contract conditions.

That means the first thing to establish is who that is. Federal and state roads normally sit with JKR; local roads sit with the district council. Where a road closure is involved, the police are usually part of the approval as well.

Ask for the requirement in writing before you order anything. A supplier who quotes a sign set without knowing which authority is involved is guessing, and the guess is at your cost when it fails inspection.

What a typical work zone actually uses

Most road work sets are built from the same small vocabulary of signs. The ones we hold, and the ones we are asked for constantly:

  • Awas Pembinaan Di Hadapan, construction ahead, the advance warning
  • Man At Work and Flag Man, workers and traffic controller present
  • Warning Sign and Danger, hazard ahead
  • Speed Limit (20 to 80 km/j) and End Speed Limit, the reduction through the zone and its end
  • Road Narrow Left / Right (adjustable) and the Adjustable Arrow, the lane transition itself
  • Pembinaan Tamat, works end, closing the sequence

Read that list in order and you have the shape of a work zone: warn early, reduce speed, show the transition, mark the hazard, then tell drivers it is over. A set missing its end signs is as incomplete as one missing its advance warning, and it is the more commonly forgotten half.

The three questions that decide your set

Which direction does traffic approach from? A single approach and a two-way road need different sets, and adjustable signs exist because so many sites need to change the answer mid-job.

What speed is the road? Higher speed means drivers need more distance to read and react, which changes how many advance signs you need and how far out they go.

How long is the work running? A one-day job and a three-month job are signed differently, and the longer one has to survive weather, wind and people moving it.

What it costs

Every JKR sign we hold rents at the same rate, so the set you need does not change the unit price:

ItemDayWeekMonth
Any JKR signboardRM 130RM 140RM 180

Rates are published for all of them on the JKR signage page. What varies is how many you need, and that comes back to the three questions above.

Where most orders go wrong

Ordering by count instead of by layout. "Six signs" is not a specification. Six of which, facing which way, at what spacing?

Forgetting the end of the zone. People remember to warn drivers and forget to release them.

Leaving no margin. Signs get hit, get moved and go missing on live sites. A set with nothing spare is a set that will be incomplete by week two.

If you are not sure

Send us the location, the road, the dates and how much of the carriageway is affected. We will work out the set with you rather than quote a number against a guess, and we will tell you when the answer needs to come from the authority rather than from us.
